What is Fake News?

It is ether News or it is fake.

One thing that may not be new is that many major social legacy media platforms are biased. Well it may be newsworthy if they are still your main source of information.

I read the article Facebook’s failure: did fake news and polarized politics get Trump elected?  It began with the following quote attributed to Trump.

“If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They are the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”

He never said that. Read through the article if you can.

Sentiments of attempting to “find ways to encourage healthier discourse between people with different political views” have become more frequent. Echo chambers can be deadly but I am unsure of how best to go about  who should be actively doing this.  How about you just present information. Do not massage or spin it and be upfront about any possible personal bias.

Trust people to see information.*

What To Do with What People Say

I’ve been tracking what public figures and entities say about public issues on a separate blog, the Usual Jesters.  Curiosity about of the how they deal with the flippant things they carelessly say was my one of the central driving forces of this. The number of celebrities claiming they would leave the USA if Trump won was one interesting  Found this article about Schumer that included the image macro about Trump that contiains the falsely attributed quote.

First of all the interview where I said I would move was in London and was said in jest. Not that anyone needs more than a headline to count something as official news. Anyone saying pack your bags is just as disgusting as anyone who voted for this racist homophobic openly disrespectful woman abuser. Like the rest of us I am grieving today. My heart is in a million pieces. My heart breaks for my niece and my friends who are pregnant bringing children into the world right now. Like everyone else I am horrified that people believed these bumper sticker slogans filled with hate he spewed. People who voted for him you are weak. You are not just misinformed. You didn't even attempt information. You say lock her up and you know something about the word email but what was in the emails? You have no clue. Well I'll tell you if you were able to read this far through the holes in your sheet. They said nothing incriminating. Nothing. She dedicated her entire life to public service and got our children Heath care and education without discrimination. he didn't pay his workers. Started a fake college. Ripped people off. Never paid his taxes and sexually assaulted women and on and on She would have taken care of us. I personally would have had to pay higher taxes. All the celebrities backing her would have. People asked how much I was paid to stand with her. Nothing. None of us were paid a dollar. We would have had to pay a lot more because we are fortunate enough to make a high income. But we all wanted to do it to take care of the people in need. She was fighting to take care of you kicking and screaming babies. Yelling about emails you know nothing about and not liking her clothes or her hair she wanted to protect you even you. Well you've gotten what you asked for and now you can watch the sky open up. Literally. I am furious. I cry for her and for all the smart people I love who know what's right and I cry for you people who fell for shiny hats and reality catch phrases. She would have protected you. Today we grieve tomorrow we begin again. Yes this quote is fake but it doesn't matter

You should really read what she wrote**, that last line of it :

“Yes this quote is fake but it doesn’t matter”

Actually that does matter. That she could use that image in relation to what she said about the election and not see that it is quite certainly the matter whether something is fake or real… well. Words are malleable to this type of person.

Do they just have  no ability to tell identify reality.  Even if they are not entirely to blame since they may be surrounded by others that are just reinforcing their delusions for personal profit, how broken of mind may this indicate?

Do you think it ever even dawned on Schumer that the negatives of Trump and positives of Clinton may themselves be fake?

She said it was a said in jest and as I have difficulty getting many of her jokes but consider what she said to have been irresponsible hyperbole.

In the Matter of Fact, Words Matter

If your average person says something untrue, it may be heard by 2-4 people( 10-14 if they constantly repeat it). Most that hear may not believe but it can still exponentially become an issue over time. With the greater reach of public figures, if only a fraction were to believe certain jests, it this could be by hundreds of thousands of people in a matter or minutes.

Winston Churchill once said “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” Recall the title of the article. Facebook’s failure: did fake news and polarized politics get Trump elected?

“Failure.” The pretenses are no longer there. There is bias, there is intent. No need to stop and smell roses when they have set fans behind them, spraying mists of rose perfume and cologne above them, blowing them at your face and dabbing their fingers in rose essence as they grab at you trying to smear it on your upper lip.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

  • **”My Heart is in a Million Pieces” well even if you mean atoms it’s exponentially more, but here is a related post on what may be going on with her choice of words. They Literally mean Figuratively
  • *there is a new change that has users see different activity of friends. A more extended friends of friends viewing feature that may reduce the general echo chamber ability of Facebook.
  • Was editing this blog post, got a notification of a periscope by Mike Cernovich, that was quite topical ands an example of the News.
