I disagree somewhat, other countries are defined by an idea as well. I think the Patriotism as Scott Ott put it, has older roots. Roots established in lands previously soaked in the blood and toil of ancestors. Europe has different circumstances in that peoples have history and ties to lands that are a part of other nations today. In addition when American patriotism physical room to expand to other land it did. Arguably still does in forms of influence and the like. Especially if the claim that their patriotism is more an idea than a physical manifestation.
