Sound of Samples #5

In Did you Steal That Sunshine? I discussed how many songs are sampled and this isn’t in one specific genre. Shall post of different versions of songs in the Sound of Samples series. May include ones that I think failed to do justice to what came before but likely keep it positive.

Come Together John Lennon/ Beatles (Live NYC)

Michael Jackson – Come Together (Official Video)

This is a good thing that came from Micheal Jackson owning the rights to the Beatles’ catalogue. When this came up in writing a separate post I found myself thinking of who actually sang the song, was sure Micheal Jackson had one with but didn’t quite seem like that was the first time. That’s why this series is here 🙂

Lyrics are the same for both versions, so this may be more of a cover than sample but still counts.  This is a good example of a song to think of when people talk about how contemporary lyrics are simple or make little sense. What I get  from what may seem like disjointed descriptions is that different people come together over sharing a like of music. This again is why I like sampling of good songs. What someone found good in the past can be renewed and bring together another group of people.

Come Together

Here come old flat top
He come groovin’ up slowly
He got joo joo eyeballs
He one holy rollers
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker
He just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine
He got toe jam football
He got monkey finger
He shoot Coca Cola
He say I know you, you know me
One thing I can tell you is
You got to be free
Come together, right now
Over me

He bad production
He got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard
He one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knees
Hold you in his armchair
You can feel his disease
Come together, right now
Over me

He roller coaster
He got early warning
He got muddy water
He one Mojo filter
He say one and one and one is three
Got to be good looking
Cause he’s so hard to see
Come together right now
Over me

Which version do you prefer? I prefer the tempo Micheal Jackson puts on it, which may be bias from a childhood listening to Micheal. Speaking of childhood, did not get that shoot Coca-Cola line until now.
