Good Gal with a Shark? | Perception Matters

“Good Gal with a gun”

I agree with Jesse. You won’t hear much about this shooting for several reasons.

One is how much guns used in protection can overcome physical limitations such as the woman we have as sexually dimorphic species. 5 foot nothing woman weighing 85 pounds trained and armed with a firearm can neutralize a threat faster than according to some reports the entire Uvalde police force of men.

Another one is of course that despite being…

Which brings us to sharks.

Check this out from David Hogg, one of the people who survived the February, 14th 2018 Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Florida.

This is odd. Support of dislike the current state of gun possession, this is not a good analogy. In his defense he does attend Harvard. How many see guns as independent from the person acting with the gun? Or do they just not grant the person with a gun any agency?

Then he uses sharks, which though capable of great force, spend 99.9999999999% of their time not attacking humans and with global numbers of 57 unprovoked attacks and unusually high 10 deaths in 2020 also have a threat perception disproportionate to their danger. So maybe Hogg was saying sharks are like guns, because those who don’t know much about them think they are far more dangerous than they are.

Getting back to guns, hard to get a solid number on how many lives were saved by guns, for example like being attacked by an animal in the wild, but some estimates put it at around 2.5 million defensive uses of guns in the USA per year. That could be hundreds of thousands to a few millions of lives saved. But there aren’t any sharks out there actively saving humans from other sharks looking to attack humans in shark free zones.

Some of thoughts on the shooting that led to David Hogg ‘jumping the shark into the gun debate’ moment.

And a followup because as usual more negative things keep coming to light about these incidents after they happen.
